Cabinets & Drawer October 05, 2017. So how do you handle picking out the right cabinetry for the kitchen? The easiest way is to call a professional design firm. Kitchen and bath design professionals are a tremendous resource to homeowners shopping for just the right cabinetry — and to the builders and remodelers who need product selections completed.
Kitchen Style October 04, 2017. Table and chair legs and back supports may feature rich detailing, and chair backs may even incorporate carvings featuring pastoral or farmhouse scenes. The use of certain fabrics and patterns for curtains, tablecloths and placemats in farmhouse kitchens is quite common. Plaid, gingham and toile are quite common choices, with the latter often featuring pastoral or historical scenes from farming eras gone by.

Options include smooth glazed, matte, hand-painted, crackled and printed. Keep in mind that less glossy finishes can help mask damage. Grout can be tinted to match or contrast, depending on the desired look. Tile can be inlayed near the range as an integrated trivet or seamlessly installed up the wall for a matching backsplash.
Kitchen Style October 04, 2017. Decor in a coastal kitchen is often seaside themed. Curtains, placemats and other linens may feature seashell or sea life designs, and are often in soft, soothing colors in shades of pink, blue and green.
Countertops October 04, 2017. Solid surface. Solid-surface countertops are made from fillers and resins. The filler is often a form of bauxite, the ore used to produce aluminum. The resins are polyester or acrylic, which are derived from oil and natural gas products. The components of solid-surface countertops are nonrenewable, but solid surface does have some "green" characteristics: it's durable and won't need to be replaced for a long time; it doesn't react readily with other chemicals or elements, which means it has low impact on both indoor and outdoor environments; and it's nontoxic, with virtually no off-gassing of VOCs. Solid-surface countertops are seamless on the surface, heat- and stain-resistant and available in a variety of colors, patterns and styles. Scratches can be easily softened with a nonabrasive scrubbing pad. A drawback to using these countertops in the kitchen is that hot pans can damage the surface. The countertops also are moderately expensive.
Kitchen Style October 04, 2017. When you start researching common kitchen layouts, the term "work triangle" is likely to come up again and again. This mantra of kitchen layout design refers to the triangular spacing that creates a convenient relationship between three key elements of any kitchen: the stove, sink and refrigerator. Almost all kitchen layouts will feature some version of the work triangle—and you should be a bit leery of any that don't (and have a contractor on speed dial).
Countertops October 04, 2017. Concrete. Manufacturing concrete countertops requires a lot of energy, and cement production pollutes more than most processes. Some redeeming environmental qualities of concrete, however, are that recycled materials such as fly ash and glass can be included in the concrete mix for texture and variety, and concrete can be recycled into aggregate at the end of its usable life. When coloring concrete for countertops, be sure nontoxic, natural pigments are mixed into the concrete rather than applying surface stains. Concrete looks exotic and unusual, it’s heat- and scratch-resistant, and new treatments help eliminate cracking and diminish porosity.
Countertops October 03, 2017. Granite countertops are available in a variety of colors, ranging from creamy whites to deep grays and forest greens. Visit a home or kitchen design store and look through their selection of guides and samples to begin determining the color that will work best in your kitchen area. Ask if they allow customers to purchase or borrow samples so you can see how they'll look in your home.
